I wish there were truth to that man. Well known artists like Saul and Buddy Wakefield probably have a hard enough time making a living off it these days even. Unless you can rap/sing/make music to go along with your poetry, and host speaking events/lectures at colleges, you're not going to make anything. If I could write and get paid for it as a full time job without writing best-selling novels I'd be on some Johnny Depp from Secret Window, ha. Poetry, especially the kind that we write (read: non-hallmark) isn't as heralded as it once was in this country.
